St. Jerome said that the epistles of Seneca were the only pagan writings that every Christian must read. In this two-part seminar, Dr. Matthew Mehan introduces Roman philosophy, the last flower of pagan thought before the Christian era.

After a 10 minute introduction on Seneca, including an address of common questions regarding Roman philosophy, Dr. Mehan guides his students through three of Seneca’s epistles:

  • Epistle 20: “On Practicing What You Preach”
  • Epistle 23: “On the True Joy Which Comes from Philosophy”
  • Epistle 61: “On Meeting Death Cheerfully”
